Hydraulic Elevators

Hydraulic elevators operate using the principle of hydraulic fluid pressure to move the elevator cab smoothly and safely between floors. They are powered by an electric pump that pushes hydraulic oil into a cylinder, forcing a piston to lift the elevator car upwards. To descend, a valve opens to release the fluid back into the reservoir, allowing the piston to lower the cab by gravity.

Working Principle

Hydraulic elevators work on Pascal’s Law, which states that pressure applied to a confined fluid is transmitted equally in all directions. When the pump pressurizes the hydraulic fluid, this pressure moves the piston inside a cylinder vertically, lifting the elevator car. The entire system typically includes:

• A hydraulic pump and motor,

• A fluid reservoir,

• One or more pistons within cylinders,

• Control valves to regulate fluid flow.

Types of Hydraulic Elevators

• In-ground (Holed) Hydraulic Elevators: Use a piston and cylinder installed underground matching the elevator’s travel height. This provides stable, smooth lifting but requires deep excavation.

• Hole-less Hydraulic Elevators: With two or more pistons beside the elevator, these do not require drilling into the ground and are suitable for buildings with limited underground space, though they have limited travel height.

Advantages and Applications

Hydraulic elevators are preferred for mid-rise buildings (up to about 7 floors) due to their cost-efficiency, smooth operation, and ability to carry heavier loads than traction elevators. They operate quietly with fewer mechanical parts and provide reliable, low-speed vertical transport suitable for commercial buildings, residential complexes, and hospitals.

These elevators are designed with safety in mind, featuring controlled descent systems that prevent free-fall, emergency lowering valves, and power backups to move the elevator safely in case of power failure.
